Buchanan Dam
The Buchanan Dam area consists of many retirement communities and businesses located around the southern part of Lake Buchanan. There are many RV Parks, motels Bed & Breakfast Inns and Resorts in the area.
The Buchanan Dam area is approximately 65 miles northwest of Austin, Texas. Lake Buchanan is the largest of the four Highland Lakes, with a length of 30 miles and a width at the widest point of just under 5 miles. Buchanan Dam is considered to be the longest multiple-arch dam in the U.S. with a length of just over two miles. The dam is 145.5 feet high.Buchanan Dam is located at the Southern end of Lake Buchanan just off of Highway 29. Buchanan is pronounced "BUCK-AN-AN" which is a novelty for most tourist. It was named after a man who pronounced his name that way.One main attraction of Lake Buchanan in the winter months is spotting the Bald Eagles that have winter nests there. You can also take cruises up the lake to spot the Bald Eagles. The Eagles have been seen as far South as the Kingsland area. They come back to winter there each year. It has become quite a focal point of Llano County.
